50 Years of the U.S. Regional Fishery Management Councils
Fifty years ago, in 1976, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act established eight Regional Fishery Management Councils and set a new course for marine fisheries management in the United States.
For five decades, the Councils have worked in partnership with fishermen, scientists, federal and state agencies, tribal and indigenous groups, and the public to manage the nation’s marine fisheries through a collaborative, science-based process. The Councils have played a central role in transforming U.S. fisheries into some of the most sustainably managed in the world. Today, marine fisheries provide millions of jobs and contribute billions of dollars to the national economy, providing Americans with both seafood and recreational fishing opportunities.
The 50th anniversary provides an opportunity to reflect on the successes and challenges of the past 50 years and reaffirm our commitment to managing sustainable and productive fisheries for generations to come.
